Flood-damaged elementary in Weslaco, Texas, won't be ready for start of school year

F.D. Roosevelt Elementary sustained significant damage in June 20 rainstorm.

An elementary school in Weslaco, Texas, won't be ready to open for the start of the school year after sustaining significant flood damage last month.

KRGV-TV reports that F.D. Roosevelt Elementary was the hardest hit of the schools in the Weslaco district, and repairs will not be completed by the time classes resume on  Aug. 27.

Priscilla Canales, Weslaco superintendent, says administrators are working on plans to relocate Roosevelt students to other elementary campuses until the repairs are completed.

The district estimates that it sustained at least $3.5 million in damages to facilities and equipment from a June 20 rain storm that caused flooding in the area.

Water was up to two feet high in some buildings, Canales says, and most of the school system's bus fleet was ruined.

“We’ll definitely be buying buses, and perhaps counting on our neighbors in other school districts to lend us buses for the beginning of the school year,” she says.
