Neighbors object to plans for Wake County (N.C.) district transportation center

Opponents say the $29 million project in Apex, N.C., would create congestion in their neighborhood.

The Wake County (N.C.) school district has plans to build a multi-million dollar transportation facility in Apex, but the project has brought out opposition from some people in surrounding neighborhoods.

WRAL-TV reports that the Middle Creek Transportation Center would include a 60,000-square-foot maintenance building, a 19,000-square-foot building for operations, 262 parking spaces for buses and 300 spaces for staff.

The $29 million center would be built on a 23-acre site near Middle Creek High and Elementary schools.

People living in the area are convinced that the project will fit in with the neighborhood. They have expressed concerns about the traffic congestion that will result from the center.

“I really think it’s just not the best road to put it on. It’s really curvy, there’s an S-curve right there,” says Janine Patel. “The traffic is already bad enough so safety and traffic are a big concern.”

A Wake County district spokeswoman says the project will be completed in two phases. The lot for the facility will be laid by 2022, and the design phase will be voted on at a meeting next Tuesday.
