With its first ninth-grade class crowded into rooms borrowed from another high school, Chula Vista (Calif.) High Tech High is breaking ground today on its new campus – with enough room for the 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Mater Dei High School has been sharing eight rooms at its campus with the fledgling charter school, as High Tech High officials planned and sought funds for their own building. The $11 million 50,000-square-foot building is being put together off site while the land is being prepared with water, sewer and power infrastructure. The work on the building and foundation is being done at the same time so the school can open by September.

FROM DECEMBER 2007: The Chula Vista, Calif., City Council has granted a conditional use permit for a future campus for High Tech High School. High Tech High, based in Point Loma, already is operating in Chula Vista in rented space on the Mater Dei Catholic High School campus. It plans to build its own facility on about 10 acres of city-owned land. The $17 million campus will include an environmental research center.
