New Jersey high school stadium is honored for historic role

Hinchliffe Stadium, which opened in 1932, has been designated a National Historic Landmark.  

A Paterson, N.J., high school stadium that served as the home field for several Negro League baseball teams has been designated a National Historic Landmark, the Star-Ledger reported.

Hinchliffe Stadium opened in 1932 and hosted teams like the New York Black Yankees and the New York Cubans.

The city of Paterson and the New Jersey Historic Trust donated $1.2 million to stabilize the structure, but another $24 million will be needed to renovate it. The Paterson School District owns the stadium.
