Harris, the superintendent of Durham (N.C.) public schools, will leave at the end of the calendar year to work for the U.S. Department of Education as deputy assistant secretary for policy and strategic initiatives. Local leaders credited Harris for a three-year tenure in Durham marked by community cooperation, academic progress and relative calm after years of turmoil in the school system.
