Apple says that users have downloaded educational content from its iTunes U website more than 1 billion times.

The site provides users from around the world access to free educational content from schools, libraries, museums and other organizations. More than 1,200 universities and colleges, and 1,200 K-12 schools and districts host thousands of private courses encompassing the arts, sciences, health and medicine, education, business and more. Content from Stanford University has been downloaded more than 60 million times.

Over 60 percent of iTunes U downloads originate from outside the United States, Apple says.
