Cleaner bus Fumes in Kentucky

The Crittenden County (Ky.) School has received an $80,000 grant from Kentucky Division for Air Quality to reduce diesel emissions from its school bus fleet.

The Crittenden County (Ky.) School has received an $80,000 grant from Kentucky Division for Air Quality to reduce diesel emissions from its school bus fleet.

The Kentucky Clean Diesel Grant will enable the district to replace one 1992 model diesel school bus with a 2014 model bus powered by propane autogas, according to a news release from the Kentucky governor’s office. Propane autogas burns cleaner than diesel so fewer smog-producing hydrocarbons are emitted.

Crittenden County also will be able to retrofit 14 diesel school buses with emission-control technologies, which will reduce tailpipe emissions of particulate matter by nearly 50 percent.

The grant funds were available as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emission Reduction Act.
