Artificial turf will be installed on top of a three-story addition at West Middle Elementary School.

A $54.6 million renovation and expansion of West Middle Elementary School in Hartford, Conn., will include a rooftop playing field for middle school students. The Hartford Courant says artificial turf will be installed atop a three-story school addition that will be constructed in the next two years. A 12-foot-high fence will surround the field. Officials say it will be the first time middle school students will have a dedicated play area that is not asphalt.
