Galaxy Elementary in Boynton Beach aims to be the first newly built public school in Florida to receive LEED platinum certification.

The re-designed, eco-friendly Galaxy Elementary School in Boynton Beach, Fla., has opened its "green" doors to 580 students. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says the new facility, rebuilt on the 53-year old campus, has many sustainably designed elements: an ice-storage air conditioning system that saves about 30 percent on the electric bill; floors made of organic material; compact fluorescent lighting; kitchen equipment powered by natural gas; and a rooftop garden.

The Palm Beach County district says Galaxy Elementary was designed and built with the aim of becoming the first LEED Platinum-certified new public school campus in Florida.
