Money woes keep Michigan school district closed

Schools in the Buena Vista (Mich.) district remain closed after a financial crisis prompted board members to lay off all but three district employees. Mlive.com reports that the 420-student district won't receive state funding for three months and can't pay employees. The students haven't had classes since Friday, May 3. The Michigan Department of Education is withholding state aid because Buena Vista accepted $401,962.51 to educate students from the Wolverine Secure Treatment Center who no longer attend the district.  Officials hope the district will receive emergency state funding. The school board meets Thursday night.
