Lake County (Fla.) district backs away from changing school start times

June 25, 2013
Plan would have saved an estimated $1.5 million, but board members said there were too many unanswered questions.

Lake County (Fla.) School Board members are looking for ways to plug a budget shortfall, but have decided not to alter school start times. The Orlando Sentinel says a $1.5 million savings plan would have changed starting times for most of the district's 41,000 students. But board members said they had too many unanswered questions to move forward. The board did approve another cost-cutting move. To save $648,000, it will end courtesy busing for students who live within two miles of campus. That means about 4,300 students--mostly elementary students--will either have to find their own ride to school or walk.
