Jury awards $5.6 million to student abused by teacher at California high school

Jury finds Chino Valley district liable for actions of teacher who was subsequently convicted of abusing the student.

The family of a teenage girl sexually abused by a teacher at Chino Hills High School in Chino Hills, Calif., has been awarded $5.6 million by a jury. The Los Angeles Times says evidence at the trial showed that the abuse occurred even after the girl's parents complained to school officials of inappropriate emails between the girl and the teacher. The Chino Valley Unified School District has been ordered to pay 60 percent of the judgment, and the teacher, John Hirsch, who is now a convicted sex offender, must pay the remainder.
