Georgia governor says he will suspend 6 DeKalb County school board members

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he will suspend six of the nine members of the DeKalb County school board. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Deal believes the district’s accreditation crisis is a “matter of grave concern” that compels him to intervene. Whether Deal’s decision will stick is another matter. Court hearings are scheduled this week over challenges to a law that gives the governor the authority to remove elected school board members. A court order prevents Deal from carrying out the suspensions until a federal court hearing is held.
