Fairfax County (Va.) district is looking at sizable cuts to close budget deficit

Fairfax County (Va.) school superintendent Karen Garza is proposing significant cuts to close a projected $140 million budget deficit. The Washington Post reports that the plan calls for classroom staff reductions, furloughs, increased class sizes and elimination of an elementary-level foreign language program. The district would eliminate 1,722 staff positions through attrition and perhaps layoffs. Another proposal would impose a $100 per-sport user fee for student athletics.
