Expansion planned for one of Chicago's top public high schools

District says a $17 million addition at Walter Payton College Prep would provide room for 400 additional students.

The Chicago school system is planning a $17 million addition at Walter Payton College Prep that could increase student numbers at one of the city's selective-enrollment high schools by 400. The Chicago Tribune says the project is welcomed by parents of students striving to get into the school, but critics say instead of putting more resources into schools that serve a small number of students, the money could have been used to restore programs that have been cut because of budget woes.
