Enrollment decline in Detroit not as large as expected

Oct. 8, 2013
Count Day numbers show 48,610 students; district had projected that the number would fall to 46,070

Enrollment figures from the Detroit school district show it has lost fewer students than had been predicted by its demographer. The Detroit News says according to attendance taken on the state’s Count Day last week and updated as of Monday, the district has 48,610 students in its K-12 buildings. That’s 2,550 students more than a demographer’s prediction of 46,070 for the new year. The number still represents an enrollment loss compared with last year, when Detroit schools had 51,319 students, and further proof of a continued enrollment slide for the district, which has lost 250,000 students since the 1960s.
