Economist says Michigan needs a statewide school facilities commission

Professor argues that most superintendents and school boards do not have the expertise to manage large construction projects.

An economist at Michigan State University says Michigan should establish a state-run agency responsible for developing master facility plans for school districts--similar to Ohio’s School Facilities Commission. He argues in The Lansing State Journal that because superintendents and school boards with little or no expertise are responsible for facility plans, many districts have spent too much on capital projects.
