Court says DeKalb County (Ga.) school board members can't be removed until a hearing is held

A federal judge’s ruling, released over the weekend, temporarily blocks Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal from removing six members of the DeKalb County school board. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says that the order by U.S. District Judge Richard Story doesn’t block Deal from announcing his decision on whether he intends to remove the six, but it states he can’t carry out the order until a hearing scheduled for Friday is held on challenges to a law that gives the governor the authority to remove elected school board members. Deal has said that removing elected officials is a serious decision, but it “pales in comparison to the importance of assuring the credibility of students’ education.”
