Civil rights group pushes for alternatives to armed security at schools

Hoping to head off a push to expand police presence in the nation’s public schools, a national civil rights group plans to issue an alternative this week to beefing up school security. The Washington Post says the plan put forth by the Advancement Project focuses on counselors, campus safety teams, secure entrances and communication. It does not support adding more armed police. The proposal is a marked contrast to the National Rifle Association's advocacy of placing armed police in every U.S. school. The NRA is expected soon to unveil a more detailed version of that proposal.
