Charter school closings have officials calling for more stringent oversight

June 3, 2013
8 charter schools in the Broward County (Fla.) district have closed during the 2012-13 school year.

When Next Generation Charter School in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., abruptly closed its doors in April, it became the eighth charter school in the Broward County school district to shut down during 2012-13. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the spate of closures--and the disruptions it causes for the students displaced and the schools that take them in--has some school officials and charter schools calling for more rigorous accountability.
