Atlanta school district wants to create its own police department

In the wake of recent school shootings, the Atlanta district wants to put more police on its campuses by creating a school-run force. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the city school system now hires off-duty officers from the Atlanta Police Department to serve as resource officers. But those officers work part-time and leave when off-campus crimes take priority. Atlanta schools have 55 officers in schools each day, spread among 103 learning sites, a spokesman says.
