$3 billion in higher ed construction funding proposed in Texas

Almost $3 billion in construction funding has been proposed for higher-education institutions in Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The newly filed legislation outlines the specific projects that would benefit from the funding, with more than $386 million going to the University of Houston system for its four campuses.

All told, $2.86 billion would be spent on construction at Lone Star State universities. It was just one of the bills related to higher education that was submitted on the first day of filing.

“In a growing state with a priority for a growing workforce, the need for classroom, lab and other academic space is clear,” the bill’s sponsor, Republican Kel Selinger, said in a statement to the Chronicle.
