17 charter schools in Columbus, Ohio, closed during 2013

Seventeen charter schools closed in Columbus, Ohio, during 2013, which records show is unprecedented. The Columbus Dispatch reports that the number of 2013 closings was unusual, but such closings are not rare. An analysis of state data found that 29 percent of Ohio’s charter schools have shut, dating to 1997 when the schools became legal in Ohio. Nearly 400 now are operating, about 75 of them in Columbus.
